Abstract

Hand and surface hygiene is a crucial habit to prevent the spread of numerous pathogens. Despite the benefits, frequent use of ethyl alcohol can cause dry hands and burn accidents, justifying the search for alternative products. Considering the antimicrobial activity of pomegranate extracts, this study aimed to prepare and characterize sanitizing formulations containing total dry pomegranate peel extract (PPE) and investigate their ability to reduce the microbial load on different surfaces. Two liquid soap formulations containing PPE (2.5% m/m) were prepared and their organoleptic characteristics, pH, foam formation and persistence, relative density, kinematic viscosity, and resistance to mechanical stress were examined. In the chosen formulation, the reduction of microbial load on various surfaces was studied. Both formulations presented similar physical-chemical quality attributes, such as yellow amber color, absence of residues, consistent and long-lasting foam, good foaming capacity and ease of rinsing. The formulation with ethoxylated lanolin (EL) showed higher viscosity. The reduction in microbial load was investigated for the formulation without EL and with PPE, showing total inhibition of the microbial growth, like 77% v/v ethyl alcohol. Based on the observed results, it can be inferred that liquid soap containing PPE at 2.5% m/m is potentially useful as a sanitizer. Expanding the availability of plant-derived products meets growing consumer demand and contributes to the development of the circular economy.
