Abstract
O III Fórum de Desenvolvimento Regional e Meio Ambiente: Sistemas de Indicadores para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, realizado de 4 a 5 de novembro de 2010, em parceria com a Unesp/Araraquara, teve como objetivo fortalecer o intercâmbio com outros pesquisadores e instituições nacionais e internacionais, bem como ampliar as interfaces interdisciplinares por meio de discursos conjuntos dos diversos aspectos da relação entre desenvolvimento regional e meio ambiente. Nas décadas de 70 e 80 do século 20, discutir meio ambiente era um assunto exótico. Os alertas dos chamados “ecochatos” foram desencadeando e consolidando as ideias da importância da defesa do meio ambiente e ganhando força tal que, hoje, estão presentes nas diferentes esferas da sociedade, nos programas de governo, nas mudanças de hábitos cotidianos da população e no incentivo aos pesquisadores para desenvolverem trabalhos de alta qualidade, que gerem dados e subsídios para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Conservar o meio ambiente envolve inúmeras ações por parte da sociedade como um todo, com um princípio básico: preservação. E a preservação está diretamente relacionada com o estabelecimento de indicadores de sustentabilidade, objeto de debate do fórum. Para pensar em preservação é necessário considerar os riscos associados às ações do homem no ambiente.
