Memória e Esquecimento: formação histórica e ocupações humanas no centro norte paulista

Abstract
O presente artigo apresenta dados de pesquisa desenvolvidos a partir do diálogo entre Antropologia e História e pretende abordar duas questões relacionadas às ocupações humanas na região norte do interior paulista, conhecida historicamente como Campos de Araraquara. A primeira trata de entender a toponímia “Araraquara” e o espaço por ela designado como constructo histórico relacionado aos processos de ocupação não indígena na região. E a segunda pretende levantar problemas quando à invisibilidade e/ou homogeneização da presença indígena nos denominados Campos. Para isso, o artigo se baseia na análise de uma ampla e variada documentação e cartografia paulistas dos séculos XVIII a XX, publicadas e inéditas, que foram lidas a partir do paradigma indiciário. Espera-se mostrar como alguns enganos e distorções foram produzidos pela historiografia regional e promover caminhos para a superação dos mesmos.
