Abstract
Para abrir a 16ª edição da Revista UNIARA escolhemos o texto Manifestações pela conservação da natureza no Brasil (1784-1889) de Margaret Ferreira dos Santos, professora do curso de Arquitetura do Centro Universitário de Araraquara. Meio ambiente é sempre uma questão importante, tanto que nossa sociedade tem tomado cada vez mais consciência da necessidade de se respeitar e conservar a natureza. É claro que os abusos ainda são freqüentes: o desmatamento desenfreado, as queimadas irresponsáveis e a poluição caótica são uma pequena amostra das mazelas que o progresso, a ganância e o consumismo nos trazem. O texto da professora Margaret, no entanto, traz à tona uma vertente extremamente interessante do assunto. Trata-se de um meticuloso e bem feito estudo histórico sobre as primeiras iniciativas na conservação da natureza no Brasil. A metrópole portuguesa tinha com as terras brasileiras uma relação que os historiadores definem como sendo a chamada colônia de exploração. O intuito primeiro de Portugal era obter o máximo de riqueza, importando-se muito pouco com as conseqüências de seus atos para as colônias.
